Should Religion Be Allowed Essay - 1961 Words

Imagine how shocking it would be to walk into your daughter’s elementary school after school, and seeing an advertisement for the â€Å"Atheists Club† or the â€Å"Devil Worship Club†. Some may see this as shocking and maybe even wrong. In some schools, they are advertising for â€Å"Christian Youth Groups†. Is this not an offense to someone who is in a different religion? There are issues in schools caused by religion, and people being discriminated against their religion or discriminating others because of their religious views. So the question is where should religion be allowed to be practiced? Public institutions and schools need to continue to strive to be free of religious bias. Historical background One large reason the church was separated from state was that Thomas Jefferson stated that it was a Christian’s job to â€Å"maintain purity and independence of church†, therefore state and church should be separated(Witte, 2006). This separation also influenced the First Amendment, which â€Å"guarantees religious freedom, expression, assembly, and the right to petition† (First Amendment, n.d.). This forbids Congress advocating one religion over another and restricting an individual’s practice. Several past presidents supported the separation of state and church. Jimmy Carter claims â€Å"I think the government ought to stay out of the prayer business† (Presidential Proclamations, 2016).
